Walking and Praying

Last Saturday, a group of men and women from ACC joined with members of the Astoria Baptist Church to participate in a prayer walk through our neighborhood. We divided into four groups of about 5 people each, and headed off in different directions. For the next hour we walked quietly through Astoria, taking turns praying for God’s work in our community.

Different groups walked past public schools, businesses, housing projects, residential streets, a police precinct, a fire station, churches, etc. We prayed for God to pour out his grace on the needs of our neighbors and for his name and kingdom to be exalted among us. In my group were two teachers: one from a public elementary school and one from the pre-K in the Astoria projects. As we walked past the institutions where they each worked, they shared insights into how we could intercede for the students and families connected with their schools.

Part of what made the experience meaningful for me was the opportunity to meet and pray with believers from another church. God is doing exciting things at Astoria Baptist. Their pastor, Rev. Bobby Moore, is a gifted leader who loves the Lord and treasures his Word. It was encouraging to see how the gospel is bearing fruit through the ministry of that church.

Lord willing, we will schedule another prayer walk with our brothers and sisters from Astoria Baptist in the future. In the meantime, let’s continue to pray for God’s work in our neighborhood right now.
